MOORCHHA PRANAYAMA

(Swooning breath)

Moorchha means ‘to faint’ or ‘swoon’. Through this pranayama the experience on conscious/ unconsciousness is meant to arise but it must be learned under expert guidance.

The purpose of this pranayam is to expand the consciousness and store prana ( life force).




Technique: Sit in padmasana or siddhasnda /siddha yoni asana.

Place the palm of the hands on the knees and close the eyes. Inhale slowly and deeply through the nose.

Practice anatra kumbhaka with jalandhara bandh and shambhavei mudra.

Keep on holding the breath longer than what is comfortable.

Close the eyes, release jalandhara bandh, raise the chin slightly and exhale in a very controlled manner.


Benefits of Moorchha Pranayama:

It is an excellent preparation for meditation. It enhances concentration power.

It helps reduce anxiety, mental tension and induces relaxation along with creating inner awareness.


Precautions:

Moorchha Pranayama is only to be done by advanced practitioners who have purified their bodies and who have a good capacity to retain their breath. With practice, the number of rounds can be increased and gradually extended from five minutes up to ten minutes. Whenever you feel dizziness you must stop the practice.

Anyone suffering from heart disease, high blood pressure or vertigo must not attempt this practice.
